THE ART OF WEARING ART

Have you ever wondered who the hidden talents behind the world’s greatest perfume hits are? Were you ever curious about the creators of your personal favourite perfume? Let us introduce you the world’s only perfume publishing house that focuses on the Perfume Designers rather than the commercialised brand names.

At Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, names of perfumers are indicated on the bottles as opposed to the contrary belief that perfumers should remain anonymous. Pierre 'Frédéric' Serge Louis Jacques Malle, the founder of the perfume house handpicks each perfumer and work closely with them individually to create works of art that represent the best of each olfactive category. These perfumers are given complete freedom to express their ideas and create uncompromised and unbiased artworks of their own. Some of the famous perfumers are Dominque Ropion who is the creator of Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit de L’Homme, and Jean-Claude Ellena who has many notable works under Bulgari, Hermes and more.

The man behind the revolution in perfumery, Frédéric Malle, was born into a French family of perfume specialists. As the grandson of the founder of Parfums Christian Dior, Frédéric Malle acquired extensive knowledge of raw materials and olfactory balance since young. He maintained close contacts with leading perfumers of the industry, and now represents the third generation of perfume specialists in his family and has become a world authority on perfume making.

The idea behind this perfumer-focused perfume house, did not come about in a day or two. In mid-1990s, synthetic ingredients were introduced and the perfume trade was being commercialized. This caused frustrations among the perfumers as works of arts were dying and their artistic status were being stripped off. As such, Frédéric Malle established Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle with hopes of reviving the almost-forgotten traditions in perfume trade.

In this perfume house, quality and creativity are of the greatest importance, hence the development of a signature scent is a lengthy process, generally lasting between 6 and 18 months. Each perfume is presented in the iconic bottle inspired by the Bauhaus movement – a minimalist aesthetic that unifies the collection and allows the focus to remain on the perfume itself.

Want to be part of the revolution in perfumery? Fret not, you will be able to get your hands on these great artworks exclusively at escentials ION, #03-27 and escentials.com.
